IKONO/INI FEDERAL CONSTITUENCY 2023: THE TERRAIN AND CHARACTER ANALYSIS.

IKONO/INI FEDERAL CONSTITUENCY 2023: THE TERRAIN AND CHARACTER ANALYSIS.

“… For which of you intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?” – Luke 14:28.

Edet John

It is ethically and professionally correct that any one who sets out to build a house should first of all carry out the soil test with the aim of determining the composition of the soil, if it can properly supports the foundation. This is also true of road, rail and other civil construction works as failure may result in catastrophe too heavy to bear.

In our daily relation with humans, ‘soil test’ is also a necessity as we do not expect a short tempered man to be a perfect husband for an irritated woman neither do we expect a dishonest man to be a perfect custodian of a forgetful man’s treasury.

In complete disregard to the question raised in the Holy Scripture as contained in Luke 14:28 – For which of you desiring to put up a tower, does not first give much thought to the price, if he will have enough to make it complete? – minority few in Ikono/Ini federal constituency have set their hands to building an already failed project with no thought of analyzing the past in the light of truth and honesty.

History has it that from the return of democracy in 1999, the office of the Member, representing the federal constituency has been rotating between Ikono and Ini LGAs for a two-term eight-year tenure. This arrangement had brought considerable peace and brotherliness until 3 years ago when the current House Member, made a convincing statement of his intention to only serve for 48 months (4 years) just to complete Ikono LGA’s turn before handing over to the sister LGA, INI in 2023. This statement was well accepted by the people and opportunity given to him with strong conviction that his words will be his bond. How sad that he suddenly changed his mind.

Arising from the outright disregard to his words and his quest to cling on to power against the people’s wish, it is saddening to note that the once peaceful terrain has now been thrown into a harbinger of tumult and war while greed and power drunkenness has been elevated and made to sit in the midst of the just and honest constituents. More saddening is that the sympathizers and beneficiaries of unjust decisions are glamouring for continuity beyond 2023 on the premise of good representation. However, this self-centred and greed-induced thought leaves the people wondering whether the minority few have suddenly forgotten that peace is priceless and shouldn’t be exchanged for anything and that terror is equally senseless and shouldn’t be patronized in whatever disguise.

Like the Bible will advise, the people of Ikono/Ini Federal Constituency should as a matter of urgency converge to ask pertinent questions that bothers on integrity and the dishonest nature of those who intend to unjustly retain power in one area for too long. Such questions as: will we be able to live with this attitude for the next 4 years? What will be the likely effect of allowing lies and power-drunkenness to thrive in the next 4 years? Would it build goodwill and better relationship between the two LGAs now and beyond? These and others will further guide our decisions.

Thankfully to God, the people through the platforms of the leading political parties (The PDP and APC) have made bold statements - through their actions in the just concluded party primaries by nominating party candidates from the politically favoured LGA in the Federal Constituency - to do the right thing towards ensuring that the peace and brotherliness we have been enjoying is not interrupted in any form by anyone.

To conclude, I will like to remind both the good and bad (if any) people of Ikono/Ini federal constituency this line from John Locke, an English Philosopher and enlightenment thinker, “Who lies for you, will lie against you” and this popular sayings that "one lie is enough to question all truths" as I encourage all not to build on faulty foundation again in 2023.

Let us count the cost before we choose!

Thank you.
